Leonard Cohen Songs
Now for something completely different, 'Anthem'.
This song just blows me away. Mr Cohen sings this song so calmly, so focussed, with such intensity, like it's the last time he will sing on this earth....
Gives me chills up my spine and makes me weep, (wooz that I am).
There is ALWAYS a crack where the light gets in.
Edit: Watch for the intense focus as he thanks his musicians at the end; he stands focussed in the moment, and he bows and they bow , such beautiful respect
PS: And how at his age, does he effortlessly bow down on one knee and smoothly spring back up again? That's got me beat, must be the glucosamine, lol...

I've just listened and watched this for the umpteenth time and just HAVE to bump it up. It always gives me chills.
And ya gotta love a man with a hat!
Perhaps this should be in the music section of 'Inspiring Songs' and not the general music section.
Lenny just blows me away every time.

Thanks HS for this, he is such a mystical poet. LOVE his voice! And he is right on the money as a seer, that's for sure. Very interesting lyrics in this song as many others.

But the one I love is "Famous Blue Raincoat".................can you get more feeling and pathos in a song and situation?

Ah yes, and live versions, of Leonard anyway, are always the best. This always gives me angel bumps and a little tear in my eye.

Thanks so much Lily de Cuir, for starting this thread.
My favourite Leonard Cohen is Hallelujah.
I thnk the lyrics are extraordinary!
Iíve heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you donít really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Baby I have been here before
I know this room, Iíve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you.
Iíve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
Itís a cold and itís a broken Hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
Whatís really going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The holy dove was moving too
And every breath we drew was Hallelujah
Maybe thereís a God above
But all Iíve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
Itís not a cry you can hear at night
Itís not somebody who has seen the light
Itís a cold and itís a broken Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I donít even know the name
But if I did, well really, whatís it to you?
Thereís a blaze of light in every word
It doesnít matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasnít much
I couldnít feel, so I tried to touch
Iíve told the truth, I didnít come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
Iíll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
